First Graduate recruits students from five public middle schools in San Francisco. They include Horace Mann, James Lick, Marina, Roosevelt, and KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy. We look for students who demonstrate academic promise, who are motivated to succeed in school, and who commit to the goal of becoming the first in their families to graduate from college.

Our recruitment period runs from January to March each year (for details about our high school recruitment process, click here). In January, our Middle Division staff provides applications to our partner schools, followed by presentations to students and parents in February. The written application, which includes a section for parents, is due the first week of March. Prospective students must also submit a copy of their final first-semester grades.

Discovery Day
In late March, we invite the top 40-50 applicants to interview with the program and take part in student group activities. With the help of trained evaluators, we select students based on a combination of their written application and performance on Discovery Day.

The application process ends in May with Exploration Day, when a new class of 25-30 students attend a student and family orientation.
