First Graduate makes a 10-year commitment to students, usually beginning the summer after sixth grade through college graduation. On occasion, spots become available in our high school freshman class and we recruit students from high schools in San Francisco.
We look for students who demonstrate academic promise -- a freshman must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and pass English and math with a C or higher. Students must also be committed to the goal of becoming the first in their families to graduate from college.
Our high school recruitment process runs from mid-November through January. In November, our Middle Division staff make applications available and inform high schools where our current students are enrolled. The written application, which includes a section for parents, is due mid-December (for the 2010-2011 academic year, the due date is Dec. 19). Staff interview applicants in early January and inform students of their acceptance soon after. In mid-January, students are invited for a new student orientation.
