Services: Academic Support

After-School Program

Students participate in classes and tutoring after-school during the school year. First Graduate staff and volunteer Academic Coaches help students hone their math, reading, writing and technology skills, as well as develop sound study skills and habits. Students also meet monthly with First Graduate staff for Advisory Meetings where they review their grades, test scores and high school course requirements for college. Students are formally evaluated at the end of each semester, and staff develop individualized plans to help support their continued progress.

Summer Program

Students in grades 7-10 participate in a five-week summer program, where they take classes in math, English, technology and study skills, taught by experienced and certified teachers. Community and team-building activities also are emphasized to help students develop their problem-solving and communication skills. Other summer activities include Olympics, Career Day and community service projects.

Exploratorium

Sixth- and seventh-graders also participate in X-Tech, a two-year program at the Exploratorium sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The X-Tech project provides intensive, science, engineering, and technology instruction to students from under-represented populations in the sciences. In addition to classes taken during the summer, students will also participate in mini-camps and field trips during the school year.
